- The poo of international applicants has increased;
- The online Common Application has taken the place of the individualized application at most colleges and universities; but,

USA Today BELIEVES:
"The college application process is more competitive than ever. The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), for example, received twice as many applications for fall 2014 as it did in 2005, according to the New York Times. Its admittance rate, along with the University of California, Berkeley, dropped below 20% for the first time ever, in part due to the application rise. And Stanford University admitted only 5.07% of fall 2014 applicants, its lowest admit rate in university history, according to the college. With more students applying than ever, and less of them being accepted, submitting application materials early or on time is crucial."
ACCORDING TO THE NEW YORK TIMES:
"When it comes time to apply to college, students who are insufficiently counseled can easily stumble into making poor decisions, especially if no one in their family has gone to college before. They might undermatch, for example, by applying just to schools they have heard of, rather than to the best institutions they are qualified to attend...
While small private schools can afford to provide their students with tremendous hand-holding, large public schools across the country struggle with staggering ratios of students to guidance counselors. Nationally, that ratio is 500-to-1. A proportion experts say has remained virtually unchanged for more than 10 years. And when it comes time to apply to college, all of the students need help at once..."

THE FEDERAL EDUCATION OFFICE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS STATES:
"This year, 1 in 5 high schools in the country had no school counselor at all."
THE COLLEGE BOARD'S THOUGHTS ON TEST SCORES AND ESSAYS:
"The importance of test scores in the admission process varies from college to college and depends on an institution’s admission approach and policies. Each college has its own policy. Some colleges, including more-selective colleges, may place a high level of importance on test scores — within the context of the other parts of your application. Other colleges, including many community colleges, may not require a test or use your scores at all."
"The National Association for College Admission Counseling’s 2013 State of College Admission report found that while grades, strength of curriculum and admission test scores are the top factors in the college admission decision, a majority of colleges and universities believe the essay to be of considerable or moderate importance in determining which academically qualified students they would choose. In other words, when all else is equal between competing applicants, a compelling essay can make the difference. A powerful, well-written essay can also tip the balance for a marginal applicant."
HERE IS WHAT FORBES BELIEVES:
"Colleges want the well-rounded class, not the well-rounded kid! The worst-kept secret of college admissions is that colleges are looking for the well-rounded class, not the well-rounded kid. They want some real scholars for every department; some superb athletes; some great musicians and actors; a few rich kids whose parents can build a library wing; and some legacies to keep the alumni happy. The applicant who is attractive but not really special in any one category is going to have a much tougher time getting in."
